A VERY Lost Classic

This one may be too "lost" even for y'all - I love the Stones version of "Lil Red Rooster". Do you have that one in the closet somewhere?

I think you're the only one who ever shows up here. Not much activity.

Yeah, but that'll change. I need to get the DJ's off their rears and get them to start participating and pushing it on-air.

Good luck with that. You two are the only people I ever see on here. Oh, well, at least we're all keeping good company! :D
Oh - and I like that song, too. The Stones version is a little tighter, but I like the Dead's version. (Go figure!)

Dixie - looks like we're the only ones who like the song!

Actually, it's a Howlin' Wolf song. Willie Dixon wrote it & played guitar on the Howlin' Wolf version - early '60s. The Stones released it in '64 but it was not allowed much airplay in the US due to it's . . .ummmm . . . "adult" implications. Go to youtube & you'll find LOTS of video - Stones, Doors, some with Clapton. I went to check out the Dead's version after Sugar mentioned it. I could have stayed online all day listening to all the different artists/versions. Good thing I have a job!
What kind of music does your band play? Anybody play the slide?

yeah, i figured that out after doing a little research yesterday. was gonna find a copy last night but i had to go grocery shopping instead. joy, joy.

basically we're a bar band. we started out leaning a little country but now we're leaning a little more rock-n-roll. not that crap they call country or rock-n-roll nowadays. REAL COUNTRY and REAL ROCK-N-ROLL. we play the Hollies, Elvis (Presley and Costello), Johnny Cash, Kris Kristopherson, the Animals, the Kinks, some originals, as well as some songs by alt. country artists like Slobberbone, Drive-by-Truckers, and the Bottlerockets which if you haven't heard any of those artists, they're more rock than country. i'd say we sound most like the Bottlerockets.

So, have you had a chance to listen to the Lil Red Rooster yet? Did you find a favorite version/artist?

I have to admit that I spent yesterday listening to the BottleRockets while I worked. Awesome sound! I'm adding one of their CDs to my Christmas list - any recommendations? (I also stumbled across the new Robert Plant/Alison Krauss CD in it's entirety - that's on the list, too!) Anyway, I'm going to sample the Drive-by-Truckers before the week is gone. Do y'all play locally?

we're just starting out. only been together for a couple months. we're playing dec. 7th opening for Josh Madden at the Blue Monkey.

good Bottlerockets? definately "The Brooklyn Side" but I hear the newest one is pretty good too. I don't have it and I've only heard a few songs off of it but they were really good. but definately get "The Brooklyn Side."

Drive-by-truckers are all pretty good. again, i haven't heard their newest in it's entirety but what i've heard from it was good. if i had to pick one... i'd go with "Decoration Day." if i could pick two i'd go with "Decoration Day" and "Dirty South." you could also pickup "Southern Rock Opera." some people will argue that it's the best one but i like "Decoration Day" best for just sitting down, drinking a beer and listening.

Slobberbone. no question... get " Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today." they recently broke up and reformed as the Drams but I haven't heard a lot of that yet.

Sounds like we need to head to the Blue Monkey in a few weeks.
